Thanks for subscribing to the newsletter for LiveOnPurpose.info. Live On Purpose is about helping you become conscious of your thought patterns, so you can make better decisions in your life. Don't live an accidental life! Live on purpose. This month's focus is on diet and depression.

But first, an On-Purpose maxim:

What really feeds us is having a high purpose in life, something larger than ourselves to which we can aspire and devote our energy. ~James Ray

Depression is classified as two or more weeks of mental and physical lethargy. However, teens are most adept at maintaining their daily schedule and putting on the "happy face" while they are depressed. Depression that stems from a specific life event (like death in the family) is the easiest to overcome without therapy. It has been found that mixed therapies work best to alleviate mental obstacles. So, for instance, combining talk therapy with nutrition therapy helps one to recover faster than either one alone.

Don't forget that your body needs adequate vitamins and minerals in order for the brain to function at its best. If you're trying Holosync and you think you're not making progress, try adding vitamin supplements and eating more salads and fruit. Based on the standard American diet (SAD), most of us do not eat our recommended 3-4 servings of fruits and vegetables a day.

I have been doing lots and lots of research on diet and depression, as well as diet and other conditions like Alzheimer's or coronary heart disease. I found that it is the antioxidants in fruits and vegetables that really do your brain some good. It's the omega-3 essential fatty acids in fish that are necessary to boost your mood, and to gain a healthier blood flow. Your brain is comprised of about 10% essential fatty acids. You can get omega-3's from flaxseed oil and algae, but the body has to convert alpha-linolenic acid to DHA and the conversion rate is usually very low. The best source is eating cold water fish three times a week or a taking a good quality supplement from fish oil.

I take my fish oil supplements very seriously. I'm vegetarian and had never eaten fish before I tried some prenatal omega-3. During my first pregnancy, I only took prenatal supplements and extra liquid iron. I had a difficult time during the last trimester, both with aches and pains in the body and with delicate and fickle moods. During my second pregnancy eight years later, I added the prenatal omega-3, and the difference I felt in my moods and lessened body aches were so astounding that I became a fish oil supplement believer, and I made an exception in my vegetarian diet forever after. I believe it is one of the keys to establishing a steady emotional platform.

BBC is a british news channel. This news report about post-partum depression suggests that it would be better to call it Maternal Anxiety and Mood Imbalance because most of the mothers who have it don't even feel depressed, they feel angry.

Childbirth left me feeling angry BBC, October 2006

Through research of my own, I have found out that a deficiency of omega-3 fatty acids in the mother may cause her to feel depressed, anxious, or out of sorts after childbirth. The baby takes all the available omega-3 while in vitro, depleting the mother's stores. Great Britain is not known for its high consumption of fish, and neither is the USA. I highly suggest supplementing the diet with pre- and post-natal omega-3 formulations during and after pregnancy. The cost is completely worth the benefit, since it boosts baby's brain development and makes mommy feel calmer.
